O'Neil was a student at high school when she took part in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 because of the enthusiasm shown by judges in her performances. Her performance was highly applauded by judges. But, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during her Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the lowest 3 and the the bottom 2. The judges were shocked by this and informed the crowd the fact that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil's performance was so consistently good, that he did not fall into the bottom 3. Following two stunning performance on September 7 2005, when O'Neil along with Rex Goudie made it to the final two contestants, the judge Werner said that newspaper headlines were going to read O'Neil defeated Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest champion in the show's history . O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol immediately.
